Announcement regarding the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES)
Introduced under the EU’s Smart Borders framework, the Entry/Exit System (EES) is being rolled out at the external borders of 29 European countries for non-EU travellers staying for short visits, replacing manual passport stamping with digital registration and biometric checks.
While the development and operation of the EES infrastructure in Greece are the responsibility of the Hellenic Police, Fraport Greece is working closely with the competent authorities to support this effort and help ensure the passenger journey is as smooth as possible.
At present, the EES process is carried out exclusively at passport control points and includes the collection of biometric data. Technical tests by the Hellenic Police are also ongoing to ensure the proper interconnection and operation of the system, and according to the latest update available to us, they are expected to be completed in the near future.
While Fraport Greece has indicated that passenger processing times remain longer than under standard procedures, particularly during peak periods, we are actively contributing to this effort through enhanced signage, additional staff on the ground, and close coordination with the Hellenic Police, while our teams remain available throughout the airport journey to support passengers, help manage flows, and reduce congestion as much as possible during this transition period.
