Fraport Greece launches the development works at Mykonos Airport with the reconstruction of the runway
New, safe, compliant runway, able to withstand projected traffic for the next 20 years
Following a very successful summer season for Mykonos airport, marked by a 19.2% increase in passenger traffic and a 30% increase in general aviation flights, Fraport Greece is launching the construction works for the development of a world-class airport worthy of the destination’s global reputation.
The development works will begin with the necessary reconstruction of the runway which has now exceeded its lifetime. The entire existing surface will be replaced with a new layer of high strength asphalt, with the necessary markings to comply with the new EASA certification requirements.
For the new runway to be installed, the airport will have to remain closed for a short period of time, from November 13 to November 29 2017. Medical flights operated by helicopters will continue to be facilitated during the aforementioned period. Mykonos airport will welcome the 2018 season with a brand new runway that will be safe, compliant and able to withstand projected traffic for the next 20 years.

As you already know, we emphasize on the safety of the airports and that is why the reconstruction of the runway is a priority for us. In cooperation with the local authorities of Mykonos with which we share a common vision for a modern and passenger friendly airport infrastructure and who we would like to thank for their support, we have made all efforts and taken all measures to minimize any inconvenience for the passengers during this period”.
Fraport Greece plans for the development of the Mykonos Airport also include:
- Expanding and remodeling the terminal – 50% increase in the total size of the terminal at 13,350 m2, with the construction of a new terminal area
- New fire station
- Reorganizing the apron
- 33% increase in the number of check-in counters (from 12 to 16)
- 17 %increase in the number of departure gates (from 6 to 7)
- 25% increase in the number of security-check lanes (from 4 to 5)
